Crustastun is a revolutionary solution created specifically to humanely stun crustaceans. Developed as an alternative to traditional methods of killing lobster, crayfish and crab, the Crustastun is recognised as one of the only humane methods of stunning crustaceans ready for cooking. Crustastun believes crustaceans should be humanely stunned before cooking - boiling any animal alive is clearly inhumane. Previously approved humane methods of killing crabs and lobsters have been claimed to be wholly inadequate. The electro-stunning method demonstrated by the Crustastun also improves taste and texture of the meat in comparison to traditional methods. Minimal stress is caused to the animal and therefore no stress hormones are released into the shellfish body. The stun current also initiates and accelerates the tenderisation process of the meat.
The animal is placed belly down on a sprung tray in the unit. As the lid is closed, the shellfish and tray are pushed down by the electrode sponge into the saline solution. The operator then presses one of the stun buttons on the front of the machine and a current passes through the 13 brain centres of a lobster, or the two brain centres of a crab. Stunned in 0.5 seconds - killed in under 10 seconds.
